Are fissure sealants really necessary

Teeth by nature have small grooves and fissures on the enamel biting surface. These pits in the tooths biting surface can leave the tooth prone to bacteria, particularly the back teeth where brushing and flossing can be a little more difficult because it is hard to reach .

Developed in the 1960’s, dental sealants offer several benefits to patients if you have healthy back teeth that you to want to further protect from cavities.

Fissure sealants are a painless, protective plastic coating that is applied to the deep pits and fissures on the biting surfaces of the back teeth.

This thin plastic coating fills up the grooves that are hard to clean with the bristles of a toothbrush. The other benefits of fissure sealants include:

  • No injection or numbing is required as no drilling involved
  • Can be clear or white coloured
  • Are applied professionally by a dentist, dental therapist or oral health therapist
  • Quick to apply
  • Do not dissolve in saliva
  • Are non-toxic
  • Less expensive than a filling
  • Last up to 15 years

Fissure sealants are a perfect, preventive treatment for young children to protect their teeth after their permanent molars have erupted.

Your dentist will need to assess the integrity of your fissure sealants every 6 months at your scale and clean appointment. Fissure sealants coupled with good oral hygiene techniques mean your back teeth may never require a filling or amalgam.
